LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) -The mother of former Iowa basketball player Ava Jones shared an update as Ava undergoes cancer treatment.

Ava was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in February earlier this year. She’s been receiving treatment at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Ava had committed to playing basketball for the Hawkeyes before suffering a brain injury when she and her family were hit by an impaired driver in July 2022. Her father, Trey Jones, died in the crash.

Michael Hurley, an Indiana man, was charged in the crash. Hurley was found guilty of hitting four members of the Kansas family and was sentenced to 70 years in prison.

Jones had redshirted with the Hawkeyes her freshman year, hoping to play at some point down the line, but announced her retirement from the sport on June 7, 2024.

In the post announcing her cancer diagnosis, Jones said, “This is the news no one ever wants to get, but especially after spending the last two and a half years working my butt off and recovering from getting hit by a car. My body is very strong and I am confident in the doctors here at Iowa.”
